The Nike "What The" Mercurial Superfly Boot is the first-ever football boot to receive the What The treatment. And while the Nike Mercurial "What The" Cleats are already delivered with a special bag that shows all the boots that found their way on the Nike "What The" Mercurial Edition, it's even more interesting to see which parts are taken from which iconic Mercurial shoe.
Inspired by a track spike and informed by speed, Nike launched the Mercurial in the summer of 1998. Its thin plate was designed to reduce the boot's weight and the KNG-100 synthetic upper — thinner and lighter than traditional leather — changed the way football footwear was made. Brasilian icon Ronaldo debuted the first Mercurial in France, with its bold silver, blue and yellow colorway introducing a new direction of modern speed in football.
Some nice features of the Nike Mercurial Superfly What The boots include a bold NIKE writing on the instep, deriving from the Mercurial Vapor IX, and the heel design that's inspired by its predecessor, the Mercurial Vapor VIII. Additionally, the Mercurial writing on the heel tab of the What The Nike Mercurial Superfly cleats has been edited to include all the different fonts that have been used over the years. Last but not least, five gold circles on the heel represent the upcoming Mercurial Superfly V.
And because the different elements are only printed on the regular Superfly material, unlike with Nike's basketball or skateboard "What The" shoes, the mashup Nike Mercurial Superfly 2016 boots will be perfectly fine to play with.
